Old Town Handyman FAQ

  • How much does a handyman cost in Lafayette, CO & Boulder County?

    Handyman rates in Lafayette and surrounding Boulder County typically range from $75–$150 per hour depending on the complexity of the job and the experience of the pro. Some handymen charge flat project rates for common jobs like TV mounting or furniture assembly. Some charge hourly rates which can leave you uneasy about the final cost.

    At Old Town Handyman, pricing is transparent and straightforward:

    * A $185.00 minimum charge applies to all jobs, covering travel, setup, project prep, and the first hour

    * Most small repairs and installations are completed in 1–3 hours

    * You'll always receive a clear estimate before any work begins — no surprises

    * Free estimates are available virtually (via photos/video) for most jobs

    RULE OF THUMB
    The cheapest option isn't always the best value. A licensed, insured handyman protects your home and your wallet if something goes wrong — and gets it done right the first time.

  • What's the difference between a handyman and a contractor?

    A handyman handles a wide variety of small-to-medium repairs and installations — the kind of everyday tasks that don't require a specialized license or permit. A contractor (general, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.) is licensed for larger, more complex projects that often require permits and inspections.

    Think of it this way: if your faucet is leaking, call a handyman. If you're moving your kitchen plumbing to a new location, call a licensed plumber.

    A handyman is typically the right call for:

    * Small repairs and maintenance (doors, faucets, fences, drywall)

    * Installations (TVs, ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelving)

    * Furniture and fixture assembly

    * Projects completed in a few hours

    A licensed contractor is typically needed for:

    New electrical circuits or panel upgrades

    Moving or adding plumbing lines

    Structural changes or additions

    Projects requiring a permit and inspection

    At Old Town Handyman, Jeremy is upfront about the scope of every job. If something falls outside handyman work, he'll tell you — and can point you toward a trusted local contractor rather than waste your time or money.

  • Do I need a permit for home repairs in Lafayette or Boulder County?

    The Rule of Thumb

    If the work changes the structure, adds new systems, or moves existing utilities, you likely need a permit. If it's replacing or repairing something in the same location, you usually don't.

    It’s always wise to contact your specific city permitting office if you still have questions.

    At Old Town Handyman, Jeremy will let you know upfront if your project falls into a permit requirement so there are no surprises.

    ——————————

    Generally NO permit needed (handyman territory):

    * TV mounting
    * Furniture assembly
    * Shelf and cabinet installation
    * Faucet and toilet replacement (same location, no new lines)
    * Light fixture and ceiling fan replacement (existing wiring)
    * Flooring replacement
    * Painting, caulking, weatherstripping
    * Door and window hardware replacement
    * Fence repair (not new construction)
    * Drywall patching

    ———————————

    Generally YES, a permit is required:

    Any new electrical circuits or panel work
    Adding or moving plumbing lines
    Water heater replacement
    New (not replacement) fence construction over a certain height (typically 6 ft in Boulder County)
    Deck construction or significant deck repair
    Room additions or structural changes
    Garage conversions
    HVAC installation or replacement
    Egress window additions
    Solar panel installation

  • Do I need a permit to replace a fence in Lafayette or Boulder County?

    In most cases, no. Boulder County does not require a building permit for fences under 6 feet tall, and the City of Boulder exempts fences under 7 feet. If your replacement fence is the same height as what's already there, you're typically good to go without a permit.

    Exceptions include properties in a floodplain, wetland, historic district, or subject to HOA rules — those may have additional requirements regardless of fence height.

    At Old Town Handyman, Jeremy will let you know upfront if your project falls into any of these categories so there are no surprises.
