I Built a Custom Reclaimed Wood Skateboard Rack — And Your Garage Deserves One Too

Not every project I take on involves fixing something broken. Sometimes it's about building something that didn't exist yet — something functional, personal, and just plain cool.

I built a custom reclaimed wood skateboard wall rack — perfect for garages and mudrooms. These racks are also great for snowboards or skis! Old Town Handyman serves Lafayette & Boulder County, CO.

This one started in my own shop here in Lafayette, CO. I had four skateboards — a Birdhouse Tony Hawk deck, a couple of well-loved riders, and one custom birthday gift made for one of my kids — taking up floor space and leaning against walls where they'd eventually get knocked over or damaged. The decks themselves are practically works of art. They deserved to be displayed, not buried.

So I built a custom vertical skateboard wall rack out of reclaimed wood.

The Build

The concept is simple but the execution matters. I used reclaimed wood for the vertical spine of the rack — it has that weathered, warm character that pairs perfectly with the graphics on a skate deck. Each board rests on a pair of small wood pegs spaced to cradle the trucks securely, holding the board flat against the wall so the graphic faces out. Four boards, four levels, all neatly stacked and off the floor.

The whole unit mounts directly to the wall studs, so it's solid — no wobble, no sag. It can handle the weight of a full setup with trucks and wheels without breaking a sweat.

Where This Works Best

I built this for my own shop, but this kind of rack is a perfect fit for:

  • Garages — keep boards off the floor and away from bikes, tools, and foot traffic

  • Mudroom / foyer walls — treat the boards like the wall art they are, right as you walk in the door

  • Kids' bedrooms — a fun, personalized storage solution that doubles as decor

  • Basement rec rooms — especially if the whole family skates, skis or snowboards

Why Reclaimed Wood?

Reclaimed wood brings texture and history to a build that new lumber just can't replicate. The slight imperfections, the grain variations, the natural warmth — it all complements the worn-in character of a used skate deck beautifully. It's also a sustainable choice, which I always appreciate when the option is there.

Want One for Your Home?
