Small Space, Big Seating: A Custom Corner Nook Bench Build in Boulder, CO

"Custom corner nook bench seating with upholstered cushion built by Old Town Handyman in Boulder, Colorado"

If you've ever tried to fit more people around a small table, you know the struggle. A few extra dinner guests or family game nights, and suddenly you're dragging folding chairs in from the garage. That's exactly the problem a Boulder client asked me to solve, and it turned into one of my favorite recent builds: a custom corner nook bench with upholstered cushion seating.

The Problem: Not Enough Seats, Not Enough Space

The client's dining nook had a small table tucked into a corner, previously surrounded by four standalone chairs. It worked, but it was tight, inflexible, and honestly wasted the corner space. They wanted more seating capacity without making the room feel smaller. That's the tricky balance with small-space seating projects: you're not just adding a bench, you're rethinking how the whole corner functions.

The Solution: Custom-Built Corner Nook Bench Seating

I built a custom corner bench designed specifically for the dimensions of this nook, using plywood construction for a solid, long-lasting frame with a comfortable upholstered cushion on top. Instead of chairs on two or three sides of the table, the bench wraps the corner and creates continuous bench-style seating along both walls.

The result: this bench alone created 3 to 4 extra seats compared to the previous chair setup, all while keeping a clean, built-in look that makes the corner feel more open, not more crowded. That's the advantage of a corner nook build over standalone furniture, you're using every inch of wall space that chairs simply can't take advantage of.

A few details that made this build work well for the space:

  • Plywood frame construction for a sturdy, stable base that won't wobble or shift under regular use

  • Extra storage under the bench for additional cushions, games, or other dining / game night accessories.

  • Corner-to-corner fit, custom-measured to the client's exact nook dimensions rather than an off-the-shelf bench that would leave gaps or overhang

Why Corner Bench Seating Makes Sense for Small Dining Areas

This is a project I'd recommend to any Boulder homeowner dealing with a cramped breakfast nook, dining corner, or small kitchen table area. Built-in bench seating almost always outperforms standalone chairs in tight spaces because it eliminates the wasted gaps between chair legs and uses the full run of wall. For families that need extra seating for guests, kids, or holiday gatherings, a custom bench can add real capacity without adding a single square foot to the room.
